Josiah Martin
Josiah Martin became governor on August 12, 1771 and he and his family settled into the still new and magnificent Tryon Palace (Robinson, 1963). Martin and his family lived at the palace until 1775, when after a few turbulent years the threat of the American War of Independence he was forced to flee the palace. He and his family left the palace so quickly that they left their belongings behind (Robinson, 1963).
